In 1970 the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice hit rock musical, originally just a record album concept, stunned the world with shock and awe and has been playing to enthusiastic audiences ever since. Songs such as “I don’t Know How to Love Him,” “You Are the Christ” and “I only Want to Know,” have become standards of American song. The all-music plot of the show is a loose interpretation of the biblical story, a kind of non-traditional passion play. Yours truly played the roles of Judas and Jesus (though not at the same time) in the Canadian tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, back in the early 70’s, which makes me forty years old!
The new 2014 Jesus Christ Superstar tour’s all star cast features Grammy nominated singer JC Chasez as Pontius Pilate, Brandon Boyd of Incubus fame as Judas, Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child as Mary Magdalene, The Sex Pistols’ John Lydon as King Herod and Andrew Lloyd Webber protégé Ben Forster as Jesus Christ.
