Bring the family for the holiday classic “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at Provision Theater, running through December 20, and stay at the nearby and affordable Best Western Plus Chicago Hotel at Hillside!
If you have kids, you have heard of the Herdman family and read the book, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” by Barbara Robinson. (This blogger’s daughters read the book until the cover was worn.)
“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is a hilarious saga about the six juvenile delinquent Herdman kids: Imogene, Claude, Ralph, Ollie, Leroy and Gladys, each sibling worst than the other—they smoke, drink, and shoplift—and their over the top “war” against normal kids. They blackmail fat kids, burn down buildings, and pierce each other’s ears with ice picks.
The local church announces auditions for their annual holiday pageant. As an incentive, snacks are promised. And of course, the Herdman children try out, horrifying the mother who has agreed to direct the play and scaring the other kids to death. Imogene and Leroy are cast as Mary and Joseph, the wise men bring ham . . . But then a transformation occurs—of course!
