The Plot: Broadway star William Gillette, world famous for his interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, is shot onstage at his curtain call, as he’s playing, surprise, Sherlock Holmes! Wouldn’t you know it, a guest is killed! “The game’s afoot!”

There really was an actor named William Gillette, and he really played Sherlock Holmes and really built himself a replica of a medieval castle in Connecticut. He collaborated with the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to create a stage version of a Holmes story.

Playwright Ken Ludwig studied music with Leonard Bernstein and theatre at Cambridge. His plays “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo” were smash hits and wonderful examples of farce. He has had six Broadway hits to his credit. “The Game’s Afoot,” a loving tribute to William Gillette, won the 2012 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play.
