The Plot: Broadway star William Gillette, world famous for his interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, is shot onstage at his curtain call, as he’s playing, surprise, Sherlock Holmes! He throws a weekend party for his cast members at his splendid Connecticut castle and announces that he will assume the guise of Holmes and solve the mystery of who shot him. Wouldn’t you know it, a guest is killed! “The game’s afoot!”
There really was an actor named William Gillette, and he really played Sherlock Holmes and really built himself a replica of a medieval castle in Connecticut. He collaborated with the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to create a stage version of a Holmes story.
Playwright Ken Ludwig studied music with Leonard Bernstein and theatre at Cambridge. His plays “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo” were smash hits and wonderful examples of farce. He has had six Broadway hits to his credit. “The Game’s Afoot,” a loving tribute to William Gillette, won the 2012 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play.
