The Taming of the Shrew

Come see William Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy “The Taming of the Shrew” at the Oak Park Festival Theatre through August 27, and stay at the nearby and affordable Best Western Plus Hotel at Hillside!

Comedies about the war between the sexes are as old as the printed word. “The Taming of the Shrew” manages to be hilarious and feminist at the same time. It takes the maxim that “men are from Mars and women are from Venus,” and converts it to men are from Verona and women are from Padua.

A rich young man named Lucentio arrives in Padua to attend university. He spies the beautiful Bianca and forgets all about studying. Of course, the path to love never runs smooth. To wed Bianca, Lucentio must provide her older sister, the foul-mouthed Katherine, with a suitor. Enter Petruchio, and the match game is on. It’s best to suspend disbelief and enjoy yourself.

“The Taming of the Shrew,” one of the most produced plays in theater history, has also been a film (several films, actually), a PBS television production, a musical (“Kiss Me Kate”) and a staple of summer theater festivals.

Come early and walk through Oak Park’s Hemingway House, or the many homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
