Graue Mill, the only gristmill in the Chicago area, was named for Fred Graue, who started up his grinding wheel in 1852 with water from Salt Creek. The mill ground grain for the next 70 years. Fred Graue was an ardent abolitionist, hiding escaped slaves from the South in the basement of the gristmill. The museum’s “Graue Mill and the Road to Freedom” exhibit features photographs, documents and other media to illustrate the story of the Underground Railroad in DuPage County.
